Jobs and careers expo opens a world of opportunities

Our Murtupuni Centre staff were kept busy speaking with Doomadgee students about their future careers and job opportunities at a community careers’ expo.

We were among 14 stalls representing education, and both state and local government and non-government organisations, at the expo attended by years six to 10 students, as well as families and community members.

The students’ enthusiasm was evident at our stand with good interest in nursing and marine biology.

Doomadgee State School Principal Jenny Worsley said the expo was an important event for students as they could see first-hand the opportunities available to them.

“I tell my students that I like them to taste other options that give them a life of choice, not chance,” she said.

The school has an enrolment of 370 students and 25 teachers, but even with breakfast served to students each day, there is a low attendance rate.

To improve student outcomes, Jenny has introduced a pilot flexi-school project for highly disengaged teenage students, which runs for four hours in the afternoon, and includes sport, hands-on projects such as welding, English and Maths, all run by two teachers through a registered training agency.
